Embracing Change Means Not Getting Comfortable

It’s not every day that you get to interview a gold medalist with 500 of your closest friends and colleagues. Click here to subscribe to my YouTube channel.

In an action-packed interview with Brad Snyder, U.S. Navy veteran, Paralympic gold medalist and author, I had a chance to learn more about what it means to adapt to significant change. Snyder is all about embracing change head on. He says, “If you’re getting comfortable, you’re probably adopting a fixed mindset.”

Snyder’s become an expert on the benefits of a growth mindset. Nothing could prepare Snyder for the lack of comfort or the familiar after he lost his vision from a land mine explosion in Afghanistan in 2011. Upon learning his recovery would mean permanent vision loss, Snyder was anxious to adapt and succeed after eight weeks of recovery. Snyder returned to his childhood sport under his former swimming coach in St. Petersburg, Florida. Snyder would eventually compete in the Paralympics in London and Rio, earning gold and silver medals and setting a world record for the 100-meter freestyle for swimmers who are fully blind.

Watch this short video excerpt to learn what Snyder has to say about living in the moment, letting go of what you can’t control, and accepting “the delta.”
