If you know me, then you know I’m a big believer in traveling down the road of life together. It’s why I talk about the importance of surrounding yourself with road dogs or truth tellers who inspire you, challenge you, reinforce your own values, and help you see the blind spots.
It’s also why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we developed a motto for Comcast’s West Division when I was president: Working Together to Win Together. In my current role as president and special counsel to the CEO of Comcast Cable, that motto is something I still strive to live by every day.
That’s why receiving this week’s honor as an inductee into Syndeo Institute’s Cable Hall of Fame is a big win for everyone on my journey. You all know who you are.
Without the incredible people I worked with over the years and the phenomenal mentors, colleagues, and “kitchen cabinet” members who gave advice when I needed it, I would not be receiving this honor.
And, of course, nothing on this journey is worth celebrating unless I can share it with my Comcast teammates, my boss Dave Watson, and “Team White,” whose MVPs are my unwavering mother, my three road-dog brothers, my talented wife Barbita, and my loving son Stevie.
To say that I’m moved by this recognition is an understatement. It’s not only heartwarming to discover that people find you worthy of this kind of honor, but it’s also rewarding because I don’t think you get this far unless you’re making an impact on others.
There used to be a general feeling around the civil rights movement that you owed it to the generations who came before you to accomplish everything you could. Otherwise, their sacrifices would be wasted. There’s no question that this honor is accepted on the shoulders of others who helped pave the way. So, in the spirit of these sentiments, I choose to accept this recognition for all of us.
